Real talk, whats the difference between "Beat-Makers" & "Producers"?
The question that has been around the music composition circle, especially in Hip-Hop, is what’s the difference between beat making and producing?
Well… here’s my take on the subject.
Let’s talk about the Beat Maker.
The Beat Maker
“The Beat Maker is the one that hands the artist the [beat] cd on his way out of the door and let the artist do whatever the hell they want to do” – Jazze Pha
- Makes Beats in his or her own vicinity (or setup at home, in the studio, etc) by their own guidelines.
- Sends Beat Cds to recording artists then the A&R and Artist (s) will make the song themselves.
Basically, a Beat Maker is someone who is making a beat without any artists present and don’t have a concept to begin with. The Beat Maker makes beats.
Let’s talk about the Music Producer.
The Music Producer :
“A Beat maker is person who just Makes beats…. A Producer is one who can make beats but also Can Arrange and Supervise a session to make a song come together” – Pharrell
- Works together with The artist and create a beat and song from scratch.
- Not only makes the beat, He or she will also work with the artists on their voice, delivery, and lyrics.
- Sometimes, Write the hook for the song
Basically, a Music Producer is the person who knows what he or she wants to do with a song. The Music Producer has concepts and works in collaboration with the artist recording on the song.
In the end, I consider myself to be both a Music Producer and a Beat Maker.
As a Beat Maker, it’s sometimes hard to work with an artist that is 200 miles away from you. I also promote myself on the internet as well and I sell beats that way.
As a Music Producer, I work with the artist one on one with their delivery (I take that very serious). If the artist has a concept all ready, I would work around it to make it the best song possible.
Being both is cool.
I make beats for myself to listen to; sometimes without any concept.
I produce when I make songs.
I enjoy doing both, so call me what you wanna.
